Day 1: Start your road trip in the beautiful Sardinian capital of Cagliari

The best time for a vacation in Sardinia are the months between April and June to enjoy the warm sea water and a blooming Sardinia. July and August are usually the most popular months to visit, so you can plan your trip in or around these months depending on your tastes.

Pick up your car for your road trip in the Sardinian capital Cagliari, because here you have the best car rental options. Fortunately, we have a partnership with Billiger-mietwagen.de, a market-leading portal for comparing car rental prices. Perhaps you would like to travel in a motorhome. Cagliari has a cool cultural vibe that is not to be missed. The town is divided into four districts: the Marina district, the Villanova district, the Castello district and the Stampace district. Each of the districts has its own unique activities to offer visitors. If you are looking for a more relaxed atmosphere with outdoor restaurants and bars? Go to the Marina district. Or maybe you want to explore the historical wonders of the city? In this case you should visit the Castello district. The energetic and modern Villanova district offers opportunities for shopping. Finally, in the Stampace district, visitors will find the center of the city with the Central Station and the City Hall.

If you want to escape the city for the evening, take a walk to the harbor and enjoy dinner at the renowned Ristorante Santa Maria, for example.

Day 2: Drive along a beautiful Sardinian coastal road to Teulada

One of the most beautiful road trip routes will take you from Cagliari to Teulada in about one hour. The road is known as the "Strada Panoramica della Costa del Sud", or simply put, the SP 71. Spend the day on the beaches of Teulada, or why not look for swimming spots along the way! Speaking of beaches, Cala Cipolla is definitely one beach you shouldn't miss during your visit to Teulada.

Day 3 & 4: Drive to Iglesias

The city of Iglesias is certainly full of opportunities for adventure. Also, the city offers a lot for history and culture enthusiasts. For example, visit the historic Porto Flavia monument overlooking the amazing coastline, or take a step back in time by wandering the city streets.

Spend two days in Iglesias to have the opportunity to make a day trip to the island of Sant Antioco. If you are looking for some adventure, hike down to the beautiful Cala Grotta for snorkeling or swimming!

Day 5: Head to Oristano

The city of Oristano and its surroundings are a must for your road trip. Check out the historic center, or take a short drive to Monte Arci National Park. If you also land in Oristano on the last Sunday before Lent (in February), the city is especially fascinating. During this time, the Oristano Carnival takes place, a truly amazing spectacle that honors the culture and history of the city.

Day 6: Road trip across the island to Cala Gonone

Fortunately, the trip "across the island" only takes about an hour and a half, as the island is not very big. Rest in your accommodation in Cala Gonone and continue the trip to visit the beautiful Gorropu Gorge. The town of Cala Gonone is also perfect to enjoy a quiet evening with wine and pizza. Also, there is no trip to Italy without wine and pizza, or?

Day 7: On the beaches of San Teodoro

The Sardinian beaches are truly something else, so it's not surprising that you will spend a lot of your time on the beach. San Teodoro offers great opportunities for water sports for all travelers. Choose from various activities such as kayaking, snorkeling, sailing, diving or swimming.

Day 8 & 9: Explore Palau and Maddalena Archipelago

A stop in Palau provides the perfect introduction to a visit to the Maddalena archipelago. But also Palau itself with its many restaurants, bars and stores is certainly worth a visit. Spend a day exploring the city and use the rest of the time to explore the Maddalena archipelago, accessible by ferries from the city. Spend the evening cliff jumping or relaxing on the water with friends. You may even be lucky enough to witness one of the most breathtaking sunsets on the island.

Day 10 & 11: Drive to the famous Neptune Grottoes and explore Alghero

The drive from Palau to the Neptune Caves is a bit longer than most of your road trip days, so reserve a few days to enjoy this beautiful area! To make the most of your days here, book your stay in the town of Alghero, which is close to the most beautiful attractions. A visit to the Neptune Grotto is like a dream come true, a truly unique experience. The grotto has a mystical aura, maybe even spooky! Therefore, we recommend a full day to explore the grotto and the surrounding caves. Some other activities to fill your days could be, for example:

  • Visit the ancient stone ruins of Nuraghe di Palmavera
  • Drive to the vertical cliffs of Capo Caccia
  • Visit the Riservato Beach Bar

Day 12: Drive south again to Abbasanta

The village of Abbasanta is a perfect stopover on the way back to Cagliari. Road trips are meant to be fun and relaxing, so make sure you take enough time to enjoy the sights along the way instead of focusing on rushing to your destination! With JoinMyTrip, you can be sure to find like-minded travelers to make the trip fun. From Abbasanta you can visit the prehistoric building of Nuraghe Losa.

Day 13: Back on the road to Cagliari

Finally, it's time to head back to Cagliari to soak up the atmosphere for one more day before you leave! Stop in the romantic town of Sanluri for lunch or dinner before continuing your journey. Just turn up the music and hit the road with your fellow travelers!

Day 14: Review your great road trip and enjoy the last day in Sardinia

By the end of your trip, you may already be exhausted, or maybe you're ready to just keep going! Sardinia never ceases to fascinate its visitors, offering countless more secrets for many trips to come. The best thing about Sardinia is that you will have plenty of time to enjoy the island, since the trips are relatively short. However, the sights you will see are incredibly diverse! Sardinia is undoubtedly the perfect place for the road trip of your dreams.
